Another Hot Day

It's been warmer in the interior the past several days than it has been anywhere in AK.  Very warm (high 55) - we've been leaving the sliding glass door open at night which Tink loves cause she can lay by the open door and take in all the smells of this place.  Unfortunately, we are right over the hotel laundry so one of the smells is that of drier sheets.

Realtor Rod came over last night with the sellers counter offer.  He left here with our signed counter-counter offer so we're just waiting for the sellers to sign that and return it to him.  Keep thinking it shouldn't be that difficult to get unless the sellers are having second thoughts.  It wouldn't be the first time that has happened to us in the past 40+ years.

My truck came in today so I decided to walk over the "hop skip and jump" (according to the office manager) to pick it up.  Mapquested and it was about 2 miles so I decided what I would do is drive over to the Creamer's Field view point and leave the rental (tthat's about half way).  Then I walked on over to the auto hauler place and picked up the truck.  Chatted with the office manager there for about 30 minutes.  She is 70 years old and came to AK in the mid-70's when her husband was working on the pipeline.  She had arrived in the dead of winter when it was dark day and night and absolutely hated the place.  She said she had to put reflector tape on her 5 year old son's coat so she could keep an eye on him as he walked to school. 

Got my truck and drove it back to the hotel, parked it and took off on foot back to Creamer's field to pick up the rental.  Creamer's field is an old dairy farm that was purchased by a group to put in a bird sanctuary.  Each April, they throw wheat and other bird seed over the field to entice the migratory birds in.  Ever since early April, people have been hanging out around the field watching for the birds. 

We would drive by and there would be all these people just standing around staring out at the fields.  Finally, we would see a couple of geese, then each day, there are a few more and a few more.  Apparently May 1 is the peak of the birdsarrival so another week or so.  There are also a few trumpeter swans in the field and a number of other birds that come every year on their migratory path.  (and I thought all of these geese stayed in MT and CO year round to wreak havok at the parks and golf courses).

This seems to be the big thing to do each spring in Fairbanks.   Sort of like driving up Beartooths pass in MT or taking an early spring hike in the desert in AZ (before it hits 100 and melts all the ice in the San Pedro River in Tucson).  They also have some summer programs for the kids that sound like lots of fun.

So for tonight, I can feel good that I got some walking in and that my truck has made it to Fairbanks safely.  Also our household goods are here so as soon as we have a house, we can turn it into OUR HOME.
