July 10, 2011 - Day 2 of Vacation - Musk Ox Farm and Matanuska Glacier

We didn't get up very early on Sunday July 10th.  JW went for a run.  Then we kind of went in small groups to the free breakfast at the Holiday Inn.  They had sausage gravy and biscuits which was actually quite tasty and a pancake baker where you would push a button wait a few minutes and it would spit out 2 pancakes.  After eating, we headed north to Palmer to go to the Musk Ox Farm where the granddaughters enjoyed feeding the musk ox.

We found out that mama Musk Ox produce only 1 cup (yep cup) of milk per day for their nursing little ones.  It is so protein rich that that is all they need.

In this picture, we started with the musk ox beside us but 5 year old MS, snuck behind us to feed him and lured him away from our picture.

After spending time with the musk ox, (Tata bought the older 2 girls stuffed Musk Ox of their own) we went to Subway for  lunch and then headed east to the Matanuska Glacier.  It was a gorgeous drive along the Glenallen Highway.  Had to stop and take a few pictures along the way.

We arrived at the glacier and discovered that to walk on the glacier, it would cost $20 per person.  At first we weren't going to do it but then decided to go ahead.  We had to sign papers releasing them from any liability in the event of injury, then they opened the gates and let us drive as close to  the glacier as allowed.  Then we had to walk. (for $50 each, we could have gotten a tour guide but that was a little much.)

In this picture we were actually walking on the glacier - there were a lot of rocks in the ice so it
wasn't slippery.

After taking lots of pictures, we headed back the 100+ miles to Anchorage, stopped by the hotel long enough to clean up a bit then went down town to Sullivan's for dinner.  It was delicious and although it took almost 3 hours to get through our meal, the granddaughters were great.

Already the 2nd day of our vacation was over - but it had been another great day in Alaska.  We were all tired so  time for bed.
